Autumn 2010 Anime Lineups!

Ah, it is the time of the year again.

My prediction of popular series this time around will be:

1. Index S2
2. My Sister Can't be This Cute
3. Iron Man
4. Star Driver
5. Mirai Nikki

Remains to be seen if I am correct or not. I will watch Iron Man, Star Driver and Mirai Nikki, I do have some expectations from Studio Bone's Star Driver.

Mirai Nikki / 未来日記 OVA/OAD

Another OVA/OAD that pricked my interest, read the manga and quite impressed by it. Directed by same dude who did Shuffle! and Prism Ark; Hosoda Naoto. Asread, the studio did botched up job on Minami-ke sequel will be animating this story. Supposedly a pilot anime episode, ostensibly to gauge response from general public.

Synopsis:
High school 2nd year, Amano Yukiteru, is a boy who has problem making friends. He thinks of himself as a bystander and will always write down everything he sees in a cell phone diary. Tormented by solitude, Yukiteru began to imagine things like a friend called Deus X Makina who is apparently the Lord of Time & Space. Seeing Yukiteru's miserable state, Deus gives him a new ability. His diary will now record events that will happen in the near future. Yukiteru is then forced to participate in a game which the winner will become Deus's successor.

Black Lagoon Season 3 Promo is up

Finally it pop up. And it looks promising. Question is, will it be OAD/OVA or series? The Ballad of Death arc lasted more than 26 chapters in manga.

Upcoming Spring Season Offerings....

Will post a detailed opinion later but this is poor crop compared to glorious yesteryears of 2000-2005 era. Usually it is like 30-40 percent more than this now.

Katanagatari / 刀語

Animesuki forum has been buzzing excitedly about this upcoming series from creator of Bakemonogatari (Ishin Nishio). From this review, it does have a promising story with interesting hook and unique art style, but, my initial positive response is kinda dimmed when I don't see Shinbo or Shaft Studio here. Not helping when looking at the attached director (Motonaga Keitaro) is the dude who did few lemon series like boring Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka, overhyped School Days and horrid Amaenaideyo. In his defense however, he did direct some episodes of my top favourite space opera series, Seikai no Monshu and Senki. A relatively unknown studio WHITE FOX will be handling this series, their most recent release is Tears of Tiara TV. There are 12 light novel volumes out for Katanagatari with one spin off volume. So far from what I read or heard, this is not exactly his/her best work but this is just second hand opinion.

It has ambitious release schedule of 1 month per episode in OAV/OAD format with 20 expected total. One wonders if it is for quality control purposes or some new marketing idea to prevent pirating of the series. Or it could mean investors are confident this baby will make money. Afterall, it is kinda hard to miss Aniplex in the trailer.

Until then, it is remains to seen if this series able to give surprises like Bakemonogatari did in 2009.

MS Gundam Unicorn HQ Preview

Looks great, hopefully the story and execution can live up to it. Though, Super Saiyan Mode Gundam is kinda silly to me, to be honest.

Autumn/Fall 2009 Anime Lineups.

This is lineup for 2009 Autumn batch. Nothing really caught my interest except for Natsu no Arashii 2 and Darker than Black 2. Nogizaka Season 2 and Darker Than Black 2: Comet of Gemini will be popular watch. However, I am actually very, very intrigued by Winter Sonata anime series. Why they redo it in this format puzzles me to no end.

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn / 機動戦士ガンダムUC(ユニコーン will be 6 OVAs

It is announced that it will have 6 OVAs with running length of 50 minutes each. Release date is tentatively set at next spring. First OVA will covering materials from vol 1 and 2 of the light novels according to the author. As BANDAI stated, it will be simultaneous worldwide release, ostensibly to prevent digital piracy of the OVAs.

The list of VA for the OVAs is here. Haruka Tomatsu seems to be everywhere this year, even in this series.

Berserk OVA?

Rumors of possible Berserk sequel is getting stronger with these supposedly leaked pics from OVA by Studio 4C. Unfortunately I have no other leads to follow so far so guess have to wait and see if this is going to be true or not. Some people decry these as fakes, some insisted it as true. Me? I have no idea at all. A look at Studio 4C homepage yield no concrete proof.

It is all up in the air, to honest.

Hmmm,

Apparently I erred big time and there is no 3rd season of Shakugan no Shana series on this October. 4 episodes with 30 mins each is announced here ; Vol 1 is on Oct 2009, 2nd on Feb 2010, 3rd will be on Mac 2010 and final one is Aug 2010.

Reason why I waited so long because I thought they will be announcement on the 3rd TV series after the OVA/OAD but I guess the speculation is dead with no follow up announcement. It seems that these OVA/OAD will serve as sidestories to expand on characters such as Sabrac. Titles were:

1. Reshuffle (Body & Mind)
2. Zoetrope (Western Mirror)
3. Ceremony (Ceremony)
4. Domicile (Home/Address)

Black Lagoon OVA/ OAD is confirmed

Slated for 2010 release, it will retain essentially same crew from last 2 TV series but instead of creative restrictive TV environment, it will be released in OAD/OVA format which means less censorship and clever angle treatment. Principally, I think the 30 manga epic run on return of Roberta the Maid will be used as main material of the OAD/OVA.

Ah a blast from the past. I remember saw this at friend's house 10 years ago. It includes every reference of sci fi pop culture from 70s and 80s which also marked debut of GAINAX with its problem child, Hideaki Anno.

Kaiser Reinhard von Lohengramm part 1

Warrior emperor from space opera anime; Legend of Galactic Heroes.

He is patterned after Alexander the Great down to the fact that he has handsome features and started young on path of conquest. Alexander also known for his emotional attachment to his mother Olympia during early years is replicated here in Reinhard's very close relationship to his sister, Annerose Grunwald who was forced to be emperor's concubine. This incident angered Reinhard that he swore revenge to bring down Goldenbaum Dynasty ( a writer's nod to Julius Caesar). Alexander have stormy relationship with his father, Philip II of Macedon and Reinhard is no exception, he disdained his father so much that he refuse even to look at him.

However unlike ambitious and cunning Olympia, Annerose serves as beacon of conscience to Reinhard until one day their world view is on separate track which arguably the time when he start to make mistakes in terms of personal development. For years of them together, she nurtured Reinhard with good side of things and make him believe there is hope for humankind despite all ugliness in the world. In contrast,Olympia practically molded Alexander into his manifest destiny, telling him that he descended from Zeus and removed any throne rivals discreetly. Some scholars even believed that she is responsible for murder of her husband, paving way of ascension of her own son to kingship of Macedonia.

Siegfried Kircheis is very close and talented soldier, his relationship with Reinhard can be said almost bordering on homoerotic but they did not really cross the line. He is perhaps molded on Hesphastion, Alexander's closest friend and male lover who is also Captain of his elite Companion Calvary. These 2 played role of emotional backbone to their respective more illustrious friend and interestingly too, when they died, their close friend began to crumble inside. Alexander becomes more tyrannical and emotionally unstable, Reinhard is more prone to impulsive mistakes and egoistical miscalculation.

He handpicked his officers, mostly Young Turks of Imperial Fleet on merit basis instead of aristocratic birth just like Alexander have his closest Companions who fought with him and promoted on merit basis. People like Ptolemy and Seleucus are some examples of Alexander's talented Generals. For Lohengramm, he pick up people like Ruental and Mittermayer which shares the similar vision with him.

This short discussion on Studio Peirott's 1st OVA made in 1983. The unmistakeable vibe of Space Odyssey 2001 is strong in this title. Directed by brilliant but difficult Mamoru Oshii, the discussion shows what is going on behind the making on this vintage anime.
